Protecting Portsmouth’s Heritage While Fueling Economic Growth

• I believe we can and must strike the right balance between encouraging new development and preserving the historic character that defines us. Growth is important — it helps our businesses, provides housing, and keeps our economy strong. But it has to be smart growth. That means projects that respect the scale, architecture, and spirit of our historic neighborhoods, not developments that overwhelm or erase them. (i.e. the North End and now the West End) 
• Our historic character is more than nostalgia — it’s an economic asset. Cities like Charleston and Savannah have preserved their historic neighborhoods while allowing carefully scaled development that supports tourism, housing, and local businesses. Alexandria, Virginia, and Boston have protected their historic districts while still growing vibrant, modern urban hubs. Even Portland’s Pearl District shows how thoughtful adaptive reuse of old structures can create thriving neighborhoods.
• We can learn from these examples: preservation and progress are not mutually exclusive. Protecting our history can drive investment, attract residents, and strengthen property values.
• That’s why I believe new projects in our city should enhance our community, not overpower it. We need clear guidelines, strong community input, and transparent decision-making so residents and business owners feel heard.
• We don’t have to choose between development and preservation — we can have both, if the council manages growth responsibly.
• I’m committed to that same balanced approach: sustainable development that strengthens our future while honoring the past that built this community.
